All primary schools are currently in a ‘transition year’ – an important ‘changeover period’ in relation to the curriculum subjects; Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) as well as Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).
The current statutory guidance (from 2019) is still legally in force, however new government RSE guidance was published in July 2025. All schools must fully follow the updated guidance from September 2026. This means 2025–26 is a preparation and adjustment year.
The guidance was reviewed because children’s lives have changed significantly since 2019, especially around:
