ELSA

Ms. Gage is our Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) here at Clehonger Primary School.

An ELSA is a trained member of staff who provides individual and group support to children and young people who are experiencing social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. These difficulties can manifest in various ways, impacting their learning and overall well-being.

What does an ELSA do?

ELSAs work with children on a one-to-one basis, using a range of evidence-based strategies and techniques.

This support may include:

  • helping children understand and manage their emotions
  • identify feelings in themselves and others
  • develop healthy coping mechanisms and teaching relaxation techniques
  • Building self-esteem and confidence
  • Encouraging positive self-talk and helping children believe in their abilities
  • Improving social skills
  • resolving conflicts and building friendships
  • providing strategies for managing anxious thoughts and feelings
  • supporting children through difficult times such as grief
  • offering a safe and confidential space for children to discuss their worries and concerns

How does Ms. Gage help?

Ms. Gage provides a supportive and understanding environment for children to explore their feelings and develop the skills they need to thrive. She uses a variety of fun and engaging activities, including games, stories, and creative exercises, to make learning about emotions accessible and enjoyable. Ms. Gage works closely with staff, parents/carers, and has regular training with educational psychologists to ensure a holistic approach to supporting the child's well-being.
