"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."
2 Timothy 1:7
Welcome to Year 6
Mrs Sage (Class Teacher) & Mrs Rawlings (Teaching Assistant)
We are starting this year with a wonderful book called ‘Tom’s Midnight Garden’. More detailed information about our topics and curriculum can be found on the attached curriculum map. It won’t all be about the SATs – I’ve promised the children fun too!
P.E. takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Kits should be in school every day as weather conditions can cause last minute changes.
P.E. kits consist of dark shorts/tracksuit, white T-shirt and trainers. Please make sure everything is named; it is so much easier to return if lost.
Swimming also takes place in November. Swimming kit should include, costume, towel, hats and goggles.
Homework consists of reading and spelling every night. Extra homework is handed out on Fridays and is expected to be returned the following Friday.
Reading – Children are expected to read every night, choosing a wide variety of text types from school and home. Reading Records will be checked weekly to ensure children are tracking their reading progress. Please also encourage your child to use their reading records and discuss the book orally.
Spelling – Children will be using a spelling scheme following the national curriculum recommended word list for Year 6. Initially children will be given 10 spellings, however these will be reduced if needed. Spelling tests will take place on Fridays.
Specific task – These tasks will depend on your child’s needs as well as SATs preparation. It may cover maths, SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar), handwriting or reading comprehensions. These may also be related to a current topic.
We, of course, prepare the year 6 children carefully for our KS2 SATS in the spring and when its done, get on with the busy job of preparing ourselves for moving onto high school, but not before a fantastic fun day at the Safari Park, a residential visit to Oakerwood, climbing and horse riding, shooting and paddle boarding, raft building and lighting fires!
With the days of the summer Term comes sports day and the Summer fete too. We are still learning and growing, preparing for the challenges ahead, building resilience and perseverance and celebrating our time at Clehonger CofE Primary school.
There is a lot to learn and a lot to do in Year 6 but everybody always rises to the challenge. Take a look at some of our pictures and see all the things we get up to .
